Stepping away from the ferocious energy of her long-running punk band, Vice Squad, Beki proves that her voice—and her songwriting—are more than capable of carrying the spotlight alone. Her second solo release on DIY label ’Last Rockers’ is a bold, deeply personal statement that trades none of the intensity fans expect while expanding her musical and emotional range.
Opening track “Mistress of Ceremonies” immediately establishes the tone; it’s a song that struts and brawls and makes no apologies for rampant (punk) rockism.
‘Mistress Of Ceremonies’ is the song of a survivor; it sneers back at envious quitters and abusers and hints at dark acts that may be revealed in time.
Effortless vocals slither and glide across an impressive wall of guitars: ’I am the mistress of ceremonies, and I bear witness to all your misdeeds.’

In stark contrast is ‘Squeezed’ with its jarring guitar riff and sumptuous vocal harmonies. The delayed chorus gives the song a Wagnerian twist in that when it comes, it gives a glorious sense of relief.
‘Little people don’t get what they’re worth, yet they do all the work for thoughts and prayers.’
As a lyricist, she continues to demonstrate the qualities that made her one of punk’s most distinctive voices.
What makes this solo effort so successful is that it doesn’t abandon her punk roots—it builds upon them. The anger is still there, but it’s accompanied by greater vulnerability, sharper observation, and a confidence that comes from years of experience. “Mistress of Ceremonies” is an unforgettable opening statement, setting the stage for an artist who refuses to be defined by anyone else’s expectations.
